Matt Damon and Brie Larson have been subjected to a barrage of hatred and insults. What were their crimes? They enjoy crypto, NFTs, and the metaverse.

Blockchain technology had more than 12 years to prove that it is not just a fad, nor is it a scam. Nevertheless, people who called it a pyramid scheme and a bubble then, continue to do so today. Brie Larson, who was in hot waters before because of posting a gifted NFT on twitter, just did an “Ops, I did it again” number.

This time she shared a video of three friends hanging around in a metaverse ambient which she called “my little corner of metaverse”. Her fans who now could meet, talk, and interact with Brie in the metaverse almost like in real-life conditions, were livid!

These things, they reiterated, consume energy. Harmful to the environment, unlike say making movies which is her profession after all.

But unless they watch these movies directly on the shooting set, then they ought to know that 30 minutes of Netflix viewing, emits the same amount of CO2 as driving a car for 6.5 kilometers (4 miles). It seems everything worth doing spends energy.

At least this time she was not alone. Matt Damon had preceded her by a few weeks in facing a tornado of equally irrational reactions. His crypto.com TV commercial “Fortune Favors the Brave” infuriated journalists, commentators, and other scribes. The entire situation was such a shit-show that it was mocked even by Southpark.

The Ad in itself has nothing controversial. It shows Matt Damon walking and delivering a talk while passing related scenes.

“History is filled with almosts”, he starts the ad,
”With those who almost adventured, who almost achieved, but ultimately, for them, it proved to be too much. Then, there are others”.

The ad alludes to a simple winner/loser dichotomy, But the ad calls the losers “almosts” because a winner is but a loser who was committed and did not give up.

“The ones who embrace the moment, and commit… with four simple words that have been whispered by the intrepid since the time of the Romans. Fortune Favours the Brave.”

There is legitimate criticism to be made of that advertisement, both in terms of direction and writing.

However, the criticism it got looked more like a mob mentality pile-on than anything reasonable or well-articulated.

People were astonished as to why Matt Damon would encourage people to be early adopters of this new technology. Was it money? No, money he has a lot. Fame? Recognition? Was he forced? Nothing added up.

Very few articles recognized that there is an ideological component when famous people endorse blockchain-related tech. They see its benefits and the opportunities it will provide.

And it is human to want to be there when something that will forever alter our way of life, happens. It is also human to resist change and fear the unknown. All we can do is use the time and means that we have to inform others and help dispel the fog of ignorance.
